A Glimpse of Artificial Intelligence by Jamie of Basecamp

By 10:30 AM I left the Safelite shop with a repaired windshield.

I felt like I had a personal assistant this morning. I had a glimpse of artificial intelligence, but not once did I feel like I was in a sci-fi movie.

Yes. More of this please. I don’t know if I would even call this artificial intelligence, though it’s certainly impressive. I think we have the technology today to make electronic devices much more “active” assistants in our lives, just no one is doing it yet.

Why can’t my iPhone tell me when I accidentally drive past the location of an appointment because I’m enjoying the song on the radio too much? Why can’t GPS and directions be more “tap on the shoulder” vs “I’ll tell you every single turn”. Maybe AI is truly needed to figure out the nuance here.

I’d leave GPS on all the time if it were mostly accurate and said things like “Uh Josh, I think you really should have taken a right on Main - unless you planning to take a right on Sherman?”

I guess I think our devices need to engage us more vs us engaging our devices.
