LA students override iPad restrictions, threaten program
02 Oct 2013 • tuaw.comThe introduction to the article:
The Los Angeles Unified School District recently began rolling out a plan that would eventually provide iPads to every student in the LAUSD. However, within a week of handing out the first units, 300 students had figured out how to bypass school district restrictions that blocked sites including YouTube and Facebook.
Ok, actually that wasn't the full introduction... the first sentence actually led with this:
As usual, the actions of a few are why the rest of us can't have anything nice...
That sentiment might even be true here, but it's pretty ridiculous to blame these kids. Information wants to be free... if anyone honestly expected this would not happen, they were themselves being stupidly unrealistic. Information wants to be free... and young students want access to the whole Internet. This was the inevitable outcome.
The real discussion here should be why the security protocols were SO easy for the kids to overcome - so blaming them for trying or succeeding.
